Our location on the Farmington River is ideally situated for river trips. We provide everything you will need, including a van service up stream.
Our most popular trip starts in Riverton next to the Route 20 Bridge, and is about a 12 mile paddle back to New Hartford. There are also shorter trips down the same section of river, from put-in points closer to the shop. These trips will take you through People’s State Forest, Pleasant Valley , ending at our on river location in New Hartford. This section of river includes some class I and II rapids, which are enough to make the trip exciting, but aren’t very powerful or dangerous (except during high water periods). This stretch of the Farmington is a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, (Farmington River Association) offering breath taking scenery of the Berkshire foothills, and some of the cleanest water in the Northeast.
We pioneered and continue to offer flat water trips on the Farmington, through the Farmington Valley. It’s a gentle glide, along Talcott Mountain ending at the Pinchot Sycamore in Simsbury. The lower Farmington is a slow relaxing ride, great for all ages and abilities. Depending on where you put in this trip can range from four to 15 miles. However, this trip requires a reservation.
The trips are referred to as “The Upper” and “The Lower.” All trips depart every hour on the hour until 3PM. Prior reservations are highly recommended. Please call (860.693.6791) or email us to book your canoe or kayak trip.
Group trips are our specialty. We made our name by serving park and recreation departments, schools, churches, scout troops, clubs and old friends. We have experienced guides and instructors, available as needed. Groups also benefit from being able to customize their trips. We often take our boats and equipment all over the state to on-site clinics, at different rivers and lakes. Group trips are a great team building experience, and can be fun for all ages and abilities. If you think a group you’re involved with, might be interested in a trip, please talk to us about it, we can give you more options and information. We have over thirty years experience.
Types of Trips
The Upper Farmington trip starts with you meeting us at the Base Camp on Route 44 in New Hartford, CT. We drive you upstream to historic Riverton, CT, and you access the river across from the world famous Hitchcock chair factory. Paddle through ten miles of beautiful hills and some of the best trout fishing in New England. The adventure ends back at the Base Camp, where your car awaits.
This section is a beautiful run of quick water and class I-II rapids, which are a safe challenge for the beginner to intermediate alike. On the average, people make this trip in 3 to 4 hours. We do suggest that if you haven’t canoed or kayaked before, try the Lower Farmington first so that you can become acclimated with paddling before you tackle the white water. Our livery service departs on the hour beginning at 9:00 a.m., 7 days a week. Please arrive 20 – 30 minutes prior to departure time.
This flat water trip begins a half-mile down stream of Miss Porters School on Route 4 in Farmington. In this section you paddle past such landmarks as Heublein Tower and Bel Compo golf course. Passing any one of five golf courses, you will most assuredly find a few golf balls. Some of our customers like to save these as souvenirs, while others like to collect them as “dummy balls” to practice driving with. After ten miles of paddling and five bridges, you will reach the Route 185 bridge and the home of the Pinchot Sycamore, the oldest and largest Sycamore tree in Connecticut. From there we bring you back to Farmington where your vehicle awaits.
Interestingly this section of the river flows north, a rare oddity in North American rivers. The Lower Farmington is recommended for any paddler who just wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Departure times are 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. only. Great for beginners and children. 10 to 15 mile day trips are also available.
Another option is going to a near-by lake. Paddlers who prefer a lake can have a rented boat dropped-off and pick-up from one of many near-by lakes, or you can put it on your vehicle and take wherever you need to go. Whether it is for the day or couple weeks, at a summer cottage, we are happy to make everyone’s paddling experience.
Romance and a sense of excitement hang in the air, your canoe drifts through the summer evening…this is a magical event you will not soon forget. The fun starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Chart House Restaurant in Simsbury, CT. The dates for the moonlight trip are July 10th and August 9th.
